Trevonette Wins Essay Competition

FCCA_winner_2k11Trevonette Johnson, a Grade Six New Grounds Primary School student, has earned herself US$3,000. That is the first prize for a Florida Caribbean Cruise Association sponsored Essay Competition.

Johnson, a ten-year-old from that South Central Windward constituency, also earned a further US$3,000 to her institution.

The young lady, daughter of Donnette and Trevor Johnson, was the toast of the nation at a ceremony staged at the office of Tourism Minister Saboto Caesar last Monday.

Caesar beamed with pride on account of Johnson’s accomplishment.

He reflected on his moment of satisfaction having seen and heard Johnson reading her composition at the Caribbean Cruise Conference and Trade Show staged in Puerto Rico, October 4.

Johnson won the Junior Division with her presentation creation on the topic: ‘What does sustainable tourism mean to your destination?’

Sheldon Govia, principal of the New Grounds Primary School, was elated to be principal of the school from which the winning essay emerged. He considered it an honour for New Grounds.

He outlined that there was no project on stream so far to spend the money, but that the “staff will decide how the money will be spent.”

New Grounds has a student population of 235. The institution undertook its own competition which Johnson won.

One other composition advanced to the final.

Cergio Augustine from Trinidad and Tobago placed second in the Junior Division and received US$1500. The third spot went to St. Lucian George Louis who received US$1,000.
