Visual Art Showcased At ExhibitionThe Ministry of Culture’s Emancipation Art Exhibition which was declared open at the new National Library August 22 closes today at 5 PM. Director of Culture Anthony Theobalds stated that “in the context of emancipation, it was important that we get the view of visual artists…” The theme of the exhibition was ‘Freedom,’ and Theobalds stated that the works were solicited on the basis of an open call to artists. Included were Cecile Comblen, Garry Peters, Pablo Antonio Vidal, Ministry of Culture Arts Educator Parnell Robinson, Oniel Samuel “Bongo” Joy, and the photographic art (texturised) of Art n Action president Kingsley Roberts, (Art n Action was a major contributor to the exhibition.Theobalds seemed to address an artist’s issue of the times by saying “The days of exhibiting for just enjoyment are past,…,” and went on to argue in response to a media question on the wisdom of buying art in trying economic times. “Visual art if well chosen appreciates in value….when the copy is an original, a single copy unduplicated….” He gave as an example ‘Dinks’ Johnson (not represented at the exhibit) who is well known abroad and commands upwards of thousands for his art-work (FYI, the works at the exhibition range in price from $200-$2000. Some pieces including a depiction of the ‘courthouse’ by Josette Norris are not on sale belonging to the National Collection. The Ministry of Culture (also attached to the Ministry of Education) Nigel Morgan explained that the format -media only-was to facilitate a more informal approach to promotion and inclusion of the media.
